Ho Chi Minh City based band, Saigon Soul Revival has been bringing alternative pre 1975 music from Saigon back to the stage since 2016 with their live performances. Honouring the original composers, singers and the golden era from which this music (Nhạc Vàng) came while applying new arrangements and interpretations of old Vietnamese songs.

The (core) band includes 5 members consisting of Nguyễn Anh Minh (vocals), Indy Jeremy Vinh Laville (guitar), Nguyễn Hương Bảo Hiếu (drums), Gabriel Kaouros (bass/perc.) and Trần Nam Kỳ (keys). With tight grooves, psychedelic textures and a powerful unique sound, SSR has performed countless shows at a variety of venues across Vietnam, including major events like Quest Festival, Vibe Nation and Mui Ne Music & Art festivals. In 2017 they also took part in the nationally known „Ban Nhạc Việt“ (known in the west as „The Band“) TV format.

While spending the last three years studying and playing this music, Saigon Soul Revival teamed up with producer Jan Hagenkötter (Saigon Supersound / INFRACom!) and finally in January 2019 they started to create own compositions in the same vein for their debut album “Họa Âm Xưa“. The album was recorded in Vietnam with additional guests during one week in May this year.

All members of the band are of Vietnamese background or have a strong connection to its culture and heritage through loved ones and their time spent in the country. (more about each member in the liner-notes) The album focuses on compositions that fuse Vietnamese lyrics and sounds with influences of western rock, soul, bolero, tango and other popular genres of this time period, most of which was banned after the war. This project strives to revive this beautiful musical heritage of Vietnam which represents an important cultural bridge between east and west.

So we would like to make it clear that this is not a retro/revival project. Those who are familiar with pre '75 Vietnamese music will realize that Saigon Soul Revival has incorporated modern elements into their music. This fusion distinguishes it from the original recordings of the 60s and 70s and has resulted in a unique and contemporary sound.

The album includes eleven titles in total, six of which are original compositions written by Saigon Soul Revival, that match the alternative stylings of the other songs on the album. Some compositions include traditional Vietnamese instruments that represent the historical heritage of Vietnamese music.

Four titles are reworks of popular, as well as obscure Vietnamese compositions from 1960s and 70s Saigon. The title “Giây Phút Cuối Tuần” was recorded as a duet with the famous (pre 1975) Vietnamese singer Mai Lệ Huyền to pay respect to the original artists of the time and raise awareness for those who left Vietnam in the diaspora during and after the American war. In addition, this version might be the first ska style song ever recorded in Vietnamese.

“Hào Hoa” features the current popular Saigonese rapper “Blacka” in order to combine the old sound with the new sound of Saigon and through a contemporary medium.

The compostion “Tình Nhạc Sỹ” (1955) from the famous Vietnamese composer Minh Kỳ, is an unreleased/unrecorded composition that was nearly lost and is now completed by the band for the first time. The intention and idea behind was to bring a (lost) song to life and raise awareness of the abundance of Vietnamese art and music that was never completed, restored or properly preserved.

Họa Âm Xưa means “Old Harmonies” or as the band put it: “The touching lyrics and raw emotions in the old songs helped us to appreciate Vietnamese cultural roots and gives a better understanding to the cultural heritage, its people and the struggles they have been through. We feel this music possesses a powerful human element that ought to be known internationally. It is as exciting of a journey for us to discover these forgotten sounds and stories, as it is to share it with the rest of the world. We wish to share this beautiful music and remind Vietnamese people from different ages and backgrounds that they have much to be proud of.”
